Howdy,
This is my first Buick. As you can see it is a 1970 Electra drop-top.
It is currently in driver quality condition. To the best of my
knowledge I am the third owner of this car and it was first owned
by a couple in Rochester, New York. The story is that it was bought
for the lady of the house and she drove it very little for years.
Then in the eighties it was retired to a large garage or barn
in rural Rochester.Having lived there for 8 years I can say that
this is very likely as Rochester is very rural outside of town
and houses with large garages and barns are very common. The last
registartion and inspection was in 1984.
The second owner who's name was Steve was a very young gent who
worked near me. He knew of the car in the neighbors "barn"
and was able to acquire it. Steve did a drivers restore. He added
the Ralley Wheels, had some minor body work done and repainted
the car Red. It was originally Bamboo Cream (yellow). Steve and
his friends did a decent job bringing this Buick back to life
and Steve drove this as his daily driver for three years in all
seasons of Rochester weather. Needless to say this was not very
kind to the old giant. The salt used in Rochester started the
cancer again we all know and hate. I first sighted the car outside
of Steve's place of business. I told him if he ever was going
to sell it to let me know.
One winter I drove by Steve's and noticed it was parked in the
lot and for sale. I was very sad as I did not have the resources
for such a purpose at the time. I drove by it day after day wishing
and dreaming. Then it vanished from the lot in the fall. I was
very upset all Fall and Winter. In the spring I stopped in to
see Steve and he told me he still had the car and he had just
moved in into storage. I fired right in about a price. We negotiated,
I went to the bank, and owned my first Buick! Now I just had to
explain to my loving wife Sarah about my new purchase! Man she
was not very happy with me. I told her I would bring the car over
to her grad school to show her. I had the top up when I pulled
in. She told me I bought one ugly car and she was not happy about
it. Then I pulled the levers and started the top down...she smiled
and said she liked it. <sigh>! The big old Buick had found
a new home.
For several years I learned about the bigfella the hard way.
By driving it and fixing the things that would break! A good example...Sarah
and I drove it to the BCA Nationals in Buffalo New York. On the
way home it broke down in rural upstate New York! The distributor
had sheared off the rivets and the internals were all spinning
with the shaft...not good but it was only 15 dollars for a new
distributor at the local parts store.
Some day I may try to restore it but I love just driving it and
showing my Buick to everyone.
I love driving my Buick. I love working on my Buick. I love my
Buick.
